First 2 Weeks in Blender

Cosmic Relief on Space Island
This a school project from November 2023, and the final assignment of our 2-week 3D-modelling course. Hold on to your spacehats!

Being that most of us had no prior experience with 3D-modeling, myself included, we spent the first week learning the basics of Blender and becoming familiar with the GUI and working on a 3-dimensional canvas.
Monday morning on the second week, we were given our course assignment: Everyone was told to create a composition of an island, and export at least 3 different still shots of the scene. Animation optional.

Wanting to challenge the initial association of the ocean, I started my process by reflecting on which given features make an island. Therefor, I came up with the idea of removing the ocean all together and create a tiny planet, depicting the vacuum in space with ocean-like characteristics
Much like any other project, I immediately had a clear vision in my head and wanted to begin modelling off the get-go. But knowing myself, and my tendency to overestimate a timeframe and maybe be a bit too ambitious, I held back and prioritised a quick brainstorm.

Luckily this proved to be useful in structuring my process, and helped me stay on track throughout the week. Who would’ve guessed!
Despite my initial brainstorm, I found myself spending too much time modelling and shading each object in the scene. I wanted to create every object myself, but my ambition eventually caught up with me. So, I gave myself a bit more wiggle-room by using a model of a solar-bed I found online. I also decided to save myself more time and use a third party image-texture for the moon and the small wood trunk tied to the boat.
All in all I consider it a huge succes that I managed to sculpt far most of the object in my scene myself. I’m especially proud of the work I did in sculpting the 60’s inspired metallic diner and the surface of my moon.
I really love how it turned out!
